disk usage and quota please see http://www.ece.virginia.edu/~eeadmin/howto/quota.txt for updates of this document. Every faculty, staff and graduate student at ECE Dept can have a home directory on our unix file server. It is also known as network (N:) drive for Windows users. Home directory usage is subject to a quota and files in your home directory (or N: drive) are backed up nightly and kept for up to 30 days. when you get a message similar to "no space left on device", "no sufficient disk space", or things you do routinely stop working for no reason, it is time to check if you exceeded your disk quota. To check, logon to unix (e.g., use secureCRT to connect to arch.ee.virginia.edu) and type 'quota -v'. Note that the "free space" reported by clicking on properties on N: Drive (windows users) is not a reflection of what's left on your quota. That "free space" is for the disk partition (typically shared by tens of users). Of course when it reports no free space, you can save nothing to it even if you did not exceed your quota. for unix users, if you exceeded your quota and need more space in a hurry, you may save it under either /net/tmp0 or /net/tmp1 directories, but keep in mind that files under these directories can be read, modified, or deleted by any other users at any time and there is no tape backup for tmp directories. if you need more "permanent", secure disk space beyond your home directory quota, administrator can create a special "scratch" folder under your home directory. files under scratch will not be counted against your home directory quota (but in future there may be a scratch quota if there is too much abuse on the scratch partition). IMPORTANT - scratch directories are NOT BACKED UP by tape and is not covered by the department's disaster recovery plan. eeadmin
