Graduate - Prospective

Thank you for your interest in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Graduate Program at the University of Virginia. The University of Virginia offers three graduate degrees: the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), the Master of Science (M.S.) and the Master of Engineering (M.E.).

To complete your application to the ECE graduate program, you must provide:

  • Documentation of Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university.
  • Official Transcripts. B average (or equivalent) is recommended for admission into the ECE Department.
  • Official GRE Scores. There is no strict minimum for the GRE’s but a general guideline that we look for is at least 450 Verbal, 650 Quantitative and 4 Analytical.*
  • Official TOEFL or IELTS scores. For non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL score of no less than 600 is required (250 on the paper-based test; 100 on the iBT).*
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation.
  • Personal Statement.
  • A $60 application fee, which cannot be waived.

*INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: OFFICIAL ETS SCORE REPORTS ARE REQUIRED

Financial aid is offered by our Department in the form of Graduate Research Assistantships, Graduate Teaching Assistantships, and Fellowships to qualified applicants. On the average, new students can expect a salary between $12,500 and $13,500 per academic year August to May). Funding for summer months is limited but is also available. ALL International Applicants and U.S. applicants seeking financial assistance must submit a completed application by:

  • January 15 for September admission (Fall Term)
  • August 1 for January admission (Spring Term)*

*Please note that significantly less financial assistance can be offered in Spring than in Fall.

This time is necessary in order for the International Studies Office to review and process necessary papers. A prospective international student must have appropriate, current, valid, and legal non-immigrant status before he/she can be offered final admission to the University.

International students on visas must adhere to the provided deadlines for application;

applications submitted after the deadlines will not be considered.

For U.S. citizens (not seeking financial aid) deadlines for complete applications for admission are:

  • December 1 for January admission (Spring Term)
  • May 1 for June admission (Summer Term)
  • August 1 for September admission (Fall Term)
